Recently I realized going to upgrade my internal hard drive in my MacBook Pro from 120GB to 500GB 7200rpm, I wanted tothe same performance in an external hard drive. External 2.5 "and 3.5" drives are not available with the same performance and capacity options than internal drives. Another important factor is the buffer size. These days, I recommend at least 16MB in 2.5 and 32MB 3.5 ".
I recommend that if you buy larger capacity drives, the one for those with more panels, as this will decrease time and increase reliability. Also drives over 1.5 TB and 2 TB are not soreliable as 1TB drives, there are some 1TB drives where 12th Product Revision. In addition look online for OEM drives much cheaper then going to the store and buy one in a box, as I was not over the weekend and paid $ 75.00 for a Western Digital Caviar Blue 500 GB hard drive is an OEM version only $ 65.00.
